FIRSTS

SECONDS

DECLAMATORY

The call for volunteers for the declamatory contest was answered by twenty-four contestants. Training for our first contest was begun before Christmas and continued throughout the holidays, the faculty acting as coaches. Our first contest was held January 20. In oratorical, Kenneth Fitzpatrick won first place; Fred Hoare, second. In dramatic, Lorraine Kincheloe won first and Louise Bessire second. In humorous, Irene Gore won first and Helen McQueen second. The county elimination contest was held here on February 14th, Mondamin, Little Sioux, and Modale taking part. Modale carried off first in oratorical, the only honors we won in the contest. The state elimination contest was held at Missouri Valley, February 25th. Modale was not as lucky in this contest, as they might have been, for they failed to place any honors, although they were close runners up. The county finals were held at Woodbine, March 7. Modale was represented by Fred Hoare.
All the contestants were commended on their show of training, personality, and the way they put their parts across to the audience. This was a great boost to the faculty and contestants and even if they did lose the contest they won honors and experience.
The value of this training is inconceivable. Little we realize the future benefit of this very training. Looking forward to the future we sometimes overlook small things, and yet it is these very facts that we overlook that count most in our lives. Great humans are great because they can express themselves, they can make their fellow men think what they think and feel what they feel. Therefore the key to success is self-expression.
