Speech Arts Department
Our High School has introduced an
entirely new system of Speech Training, under the supervision of Miss
Harland. More than just a class venture, it deals with play work as well.
The first successful speech work this year was the all
high school play, "Sound Your Horn". It was followed by the carnival
showing of "Double Exposure", a play written by the director. "Mary the
Boss' Daughter" was next presented by the Juniors on January 17th. It won
the acclaim of the whole audience. One act plays, a group of four, will be
given on March 6th. One act plays have proved to be superior to
declamatory work and much preferable to the old type of speech. One of the
plays will be presented at the county festival.
Built around our daily classes, Speech has proved to be
much more successful. The first semester the Juniors and Seniors practiced
in manners, platform speaking, and conversation. All three English classes
are developing strongly into better Speech groups and by the following
year we hope to have a very fine department. The Sophomores have been
learning how to conduct themselves in orderly fashion for later life
through their constitutional self-government. The Freshmen also have the
same parliamentary procedure.
Verse speaking is an entirely new form of speech
training. It consists of reading verse in unison or in parts according to
voice ranges of the choir.
Cheer Leaders
"Generators of Pep" might well be the titles of this year's leaders at M. H. S. Geraldine Vittitoe, Vergil Davis, and Loren Hoss were elected to do the job. They have kept the fans boosting the teams at all our games.
"Lost yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever."
